Overview

NN/g is a UX company that delivers design and research-oriented guidance through their UX courses, videos, and a plethora of free articles. I was fortunate enough to serve as a Design Assistant and work closely with the design team to create captivating and informative social media content.

My Role

As a Design Assistant, I translated NN/g's article and video content into digestible carousel posts for Instagram and LinkedIn. I designed each graphic myself to best represent the article content (except for the AI bot and pointing finger icons). In addition to the posts, I adapted the cover designs for use in social cards for LinkedIn, their weekly newsletter, and article cards on their website. I also designed infographic posters for more complex topics.

Carousel Posts

Carousel Posts Process

My first step in approaching the design of NN/g's carousel posts was to extract key points that could exist harmoniously as a set of separate slides. Sometimes his looked like focusing on a specific section of the article that was already organized in neat steps or paragraphs. This initial step helped me derive a focused title for the post, and from there, I used my skills in illustration and visualization to convey ideas and showcase examples from the text.

I ensured that the information I selected represented the articles' purpose, and most importantly, provided a brief, yet crucial learning moment for the company's audience.

My Takeaway

The biggest lesson from designing social posts for NN/g was to not trade quality for brevity. Social posts must engage and educate their audience efficiently on platforms where media is digested quickly. After so many carousel designs, I became increasingly confident in my ability to translate ideas complex and simple alike into enticing social media content.

Infographic Process

I had the honor of being tasked to design an infographic on UX vs. UI to supplement a video on their distinctions. I selected four, very different versions to show the drastic changes I made through the process of receiving feedback.

The video likened the concepts of UX and UI to cake ingredients and decorations respectively, so naturally I wanted that metaphor to be prominent early on. However, I was advised to step away from such a reductive comparison, so I gradually refined how I represented their relationship. I began to rely on less color and more on how the concepts themselves were explained, the examples given, and how the layout of information conveyed their correlation.

My Takeaway

My takeaway from this project was a deep appreciation for the time involved in making an idea the best it can be. It may have been frustrating to scrap an idea and pivot several times, but that process resulted in a more comprehensive design.
